The St. Martin's day (Nov. 11, 2009)
In Germany, we have an event for and with the children, which is held every year in November called St. Martin’s Day.
All small children look forward to St. Martin’s Day which is on the 11th of November. That is the time when the weather is getting colder and when the days get shorter. On that day the kindergartens organize a lantern procession for the children. They meet with their parents and all other children to walk around, singing the traditional St. Martin’s lantern songs and carrying their handmade lanterns. The lanterns are usually made by the children themselves in the kindergarten a few days before. The proud owners then want to show it off to everybody. A small candle is put inside the lantern.
