In the very competitive UK film market, we need a close co-operation with suppliers to retain our largest customers

U.K.
Toray International U.K. Ltd. (TIUK)
Films Dept.
Nick Hardy

  1. Q1. What does your company do?
TEL is Toray’s UK trading company based in London and is responsible for local sales of textiles, carbon fibre and films supplied by our worldwide manufacturing sites.
  2. Q2. What does your department/section do and what work are you in charge of?
My department looks after sales of Toray’s films in the UK, including Lumirror* and Toyoflon*. I am responsible for sales to all customers, working with end users to inform them about our developments and planning sales budgets with our suppliers within Toray.
  3. Q3. What kind of job do you mainly put a lot of effort into?
Most of my effort is concentrated on working with existing customers to retain our current business and finding new potential customers with applications for Toray’s films for the future.
  4. Q4. When do you feel rewarded at work?
For me, the best reward is when the first sales are made to a new customer or a long term development project becomes a commercial, profitable reality. This is especially true when problems have been overcome to achieve the result.
  5. Q5. What was your most impressive work?
The U.K. market, for polyester films in particular, is very competitive and it has taken a lot of hard work and close co-operation with suppliers to retain our largest customers against strong competition.
I have also been successful qualifying Toray films for major brand food products both in the U.K. and for export, which has directly increased to our profits.
  6. Q6. What is it that you put a lot of effort into in your personal life?
Away from work, I enjoy being outdoors, so my weekends are spent mountain biking, windsurfing and hiking with friends.
When the weather permits, (which is not very often this year), my wife joins me on my motorbike and we travel mainly around the UK, but we’ve also ridden as far as Spain.
I’ve also been trying to improve my digital photography skills to be able to take better photos, but producing satisfying pictures is often quite a challenge.
