TORAY PAN PACIFIC OPEN TENNIS TOURANAMENT 2004

In welcoming its 21st anniversary,
we are honored to inform you that the Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament
is to be held from January 31st to February 8th, 2004,
at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
We are pleased to announce the participating Main Draw Singles players in this
event, today.
This is the Tier I tournament of the WTA Tour. With so many top-ranked players
in the draw, it has been regarded as one of the comparably prestigious events,
right next to Grand Slams.
Again this year, the world top ranking players will perform the exciting and
thrilling matches. In addition, Japanese players are achieving a number of significant
successes in recent, which make us their impressive performances at this 2004
Toray Pan Pacific Tennis.
Passing the significant milestone in 2003 celebrating its 20th anniversary, we
expect this tournament will make a great stride forward for the further success.

On behalf of Japan Tennis Association, it is our great honor
to extend our sincere appreciation to Toray Industries, Inc. to hold the outstanding
event, the Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament, celebrating its 21st anniversary.
As comparably big event with the Grand Slams, it is sanctioned by the WTA TOUR,
the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the Asian Tennis Federation (ATF),
and the Japan Tennis Association (JTA). With so many entries from the world top-ranked
women players, it is the excellent proof that great consideration have always
been given to players and fans to organize this tournament for years.
From 2002, the winner of All Japan Tennis has become qualified as a Main Draw
Wildcard, and the winner of Sutama International is to be qualified as a Qualifying
Wildcard. This certainly encourages the Japanese players to try even harder for
the gateway to victory. This year, we hope the All Japan Tennis winner Yuka Yoshida,
and Sutama International winner Mayumi Yamamoto will take a step to the world
stage from this tournament, further than ever before.
The Japan Tennis Association is very pleased to have received the opportunity,
that the winner of 2004 All Japan Indoor Tennis will receive the Wild Card of
2005 Toray Pan Pacific Tennis Qualifying. For the Japanese women players, this
opens the broader way for the Tier I tournament.
In recent, outstanding performance of Ai Sugiyama, who has cracked the world
top 10 both in Singles and Doubles, women’s tennis in Japan is in the golden
period since K. Date won the game over S. Graff at Fed Cup in 1996 . Accordingly,
the 2004 Toray Pan Pacific Tennis will be the clue for the dramatic outset of
the season this year. Japan Tennis Association earnestly wishes that this leading
tennis tournament will lead tennis as a sport toward further development, supported
by sponsors, media, tennis fans, and players. We truly hope that all the tennis
fans in Japan will enjoy exciting matches performed by the world top tennis players,
especially the matches of Japanese players.

The 2003 Australian Open finalist, and the former world ranking No.1 player,
who is the premier of the power-tennis. Her outstandingly fast and powerful performances
are too good to miss.
The 2003 winner Davenport has the chance to get her 4th title
of this tournament, which is same as Hingis.
Latter 2003 season seems to be tough for Davenport. The 2004 season is the year
to put her prestigious than ever before. Her exciting play will be performed.
Capriati comes back to Japan in 12years.
The 3times semifinalist in the US Open in her career. Has been moving into
high gear in the latter 2003 season, which may let her get into full swing.
Fast Growing Slovakian, Hantuchova's first appearance
Hantuchova has made a spectacular showing throughout the 2003 season, and first
reached to top 5 as Slovakian player. She needs to brace up to keep the good
condition for 2004 seasons. It is the good opportunity for spectators to take
some cues what the necessity for young players to step forward.
Sugiyama,the substantial skills as world No.10 will blow up on court.
Got the titles at Scottsdale and Linz in 2003, more expectations are placed on
the Japanese top player. The other Japanese quite active player, Yuka Yoshida,
became the winner at the All Japan Tennis, which will lead to a step to the world
stage than ever. Enjoying the tennis, her persistent and aggressive performance
will make games. |

2003 season was the decisive year for me. The All Japan Tennis titles built up
my confidence. It will be my 6th participation in the Toray Pan Pacific
Tennis Main Draw, and I am very much looking forward it. I will do my best at
