■ Tournament Significance: Incentive to Junior Players ■ |
Koji Watanabe
Japan Tennis Association |
On behalf of Japan Tennis Association, it is our great honor
to extend our sincere congratulations to Toray Industries, Inc. to hold the outstanding
event, the Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament, celebrating its 22nd anniversary.
As comparably big event with the Grand Slams, this tournament is sanctioned by
the WTA TOUR, the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the Asian Tennis Federation
(ATF), and the Japan Tennis Association (JTA). Obviously, it is very important
foothold for players as the beginning of the new season, as well as the Australian
Open. For years, great considerations have always been given to players and fans
to make this tournament more prestigious.
From 2002, the winner of All Japan Tennis Championships has become qualified
as a Main Draw Wildcard, and the winner of Sutama International is to be qualified
as a Qualifying Wildcard. In addition, the Qualifying Wildcard is also afforded
for the winner of All Japan Indoor Tennis Championships. This certainly encourages
the Japanese players to try even harder for the gateway to victory at every tournament
organized by JTA. The winners of 2004 season were, Miho Saeki (All Japan Tennis),
Natsumi Hamamura (Sutama International) and Shiho Hisamatsu (All Japan Indoor
Tennis). We earnestly hope that these players will take a step to the world stage
from this tournament, further than ever before.
In recent, we see many outstanding performances of junior players against top
players, which have been raising the expectation of tennis fans for every match.
Marking the start of the new season, this Toray Pan Pacific Tennis gives a huge
incentive to young women players in Japan.
Japan Tennis Association is sincerely grateful for the cooperation by sponsors,
media, tennis fans, and players to support this leading tennis tournament. We
truly hope that all the tennis fans in Japan will enjoy exciting matches performed
by the world top players, especially the matches of Japanese players.
At last and foremost, we would like to send our wishes for the success of this
tournament, at the dawn of the coming New Year. |

| Ranking #1 player Lindsay Davenport, most
popular heroine Maria Sharapova, and the returning Japanese player Ai Sugiyama
will participate in the Toray Pan Pacific Tennis 2005. |
|
|
The World Most Popular Heroin Maria Sharapova
Grabbing all the limelight of women’s tennis in 2004, Maria Sharapova is
now the most popular heroin. She got the heels of Sugiyama at the quarter-final
and of Davenport at the semi-final, in the 2004 Wimbledon. We may see their head-to-head
again this time.
The Russian Anchors
In addition to Sharapova, the US Open winner Svetlana Kuznetsova will be the
new comer, and Elena Dementieva, the finalist of French Open and US Open will
participate. With the first victory at the Fed Cup this year, Russian anchors
will be the key for the 2005 season.
Toray PPO legend returns – Lindsay Davenport
The 2004 Toray PPO winner Lindsay Davenport became the No.1 in the 2004 season.
This means that the legend, “Toray PPO winner becomes the No.1 of the year” has
returned. This time, she is expected if; 1) most career Singles winners (currently
4times, same as M. Hingis), and 2) three year consecutive victory (new record
of Toray PPO).
Ai Sugiyama returns after 1 year absence from tournament
in Japan
She was only one step away for the 2004 Toray PPO victory. All her fans expect
her best performances at this 2005 event. The first Doubles title is also expected. |
** Message from Ai Sugiyama **
Regretfully, I could not have my best performances at the 2004 Toray PPO because
my physical condition was not perfect due to cold. Therefore, I would like to
play and enjoy my matches at my best this time. I hope many fans enjoy our matches
on site, at one of the few occasion of international tennis event in Japan. |
|
|
Japanese players will blow up on court.
The All Japan Tennis winner Miho Saeki acquired the 2005 Toray PPO Main Draw
wild card. I hope her best performances to take a step forward for the world
stage. With regard to Shinobu Asagoe, the US Open quarter-finalist, will take
an active part both in Singles and Doubles. |
