Toray Announces Winners of the 7th "Digital Creation Awards"

Toray Industries, Inc. announced today the winning entries for the seventh "Digital Creation Awards (DCA)," a digital artwork competition, which has been held on company's website. Each entry was carefully considered by the Screening Committee of five judges, including new members: Mr. Yoichiro Kawaguchi, Professor at the Graduate School of University of Tokyo, and CG artist, as Chairman; and Mr. Nobumichi Tosa, a multi-dimensional artist of Yoshimoto Kogyo, the President of Maywa Denki as screening committee.

The Grand Prize of the General Section was awarded to Mr. Tomohiro Kimura, artwork entitled "Revival." Also, three Excellence Awards and ten Honorable Mention Awards were awarded. Further, this year, artwork "Angelus," by Mr. Andrew Mamo from Australia, was selected for the Maywa Denki Award by the new Screening Committee member Mr. Tosa. For winning this award, products from Maywa Denki were awarded.

As for the Junior Section, unfortunately, no artwork was selected for either the Grand Prize or Excellence Awards. The Encouragement Awards, however, were given to two entries.

The seventh DCA received 540 pieces of artwork, from 16 countries all over the world, during October to December 2002. The number of entries this time was record high.

This year, the contest entries turned out to be rich in variety, as well as internationality under three thematic subjects: 1) City that Breathes; 2) Throb of Festival; and 3) Traveling Heart.

The total prize pool of cash and complimentary gifts, were four million yen, approximately 34,000 US dollars. The Grand Prize winner of the General Section was awarded 10,000 US dollars, and complimentary gifts including one of our products, the E-Filter* (low reflecting filter for PC). Each Excellence Award winner was awarded 3,000 US dollars and E-Filter*.

Starting today, award-winning artworks will be displayed on the Art Space site of our Home Page.

Details of the eighth DCA will be announced on the company's website in June 2003. Artwork submissions will be accepted, via online, during the period starting October through the beginning of December, 2003.

Though movies are currently becoming the mainstream of CG, Toray would like to take a second look at the meaning of hosting a competition for "still pictures." To remain current, and in hopes of attracting many more participants, the company plans of renewal design of the website.

To support and nurture digital artists around the world, Toray will continue further develop meant of the "Digital Creation Awards," as a part of the company's philanthropic activity.
