The Engineering Development Center advances R&D into innovative engineering technologies to commercialize new materials and brands. Originally established in 1961 to forge engineering breakthroughs for production facilities and technologies, it remains firmly focused on breakthrough engineering research for well over four decades.
Since inception, the Engineering Development Center has turned out core engineering technologies for use in production facilities at the main pillar of Toray business. They include high-speed take-up winders with synthesized fiber, plastic film manufacturing equipment, liquid crystal display color filter production systems and other advances. Moreover, technologies nurtured through development of new electronics machinery products and materials, various means of simulation and other work have been effectively instilled in the equipment, electronics and software businesses of Toray Engineering Co., Ltd. and other Toray Group member companies.
Today the Center works through three development laboratories, spearheading research into increasingly more advanced and competitive facilities and equipment for use in the production processes spanning almost all Toray Group business fields. Examples include synthetic fibers, plastic resins, films, carbon fibers, composite materials, artificial kidneys and other medical devices, liquid crystal color filters, PDP panels, circuit materials and other electronic information materials, water treatment equipment and more.

To swiftly commercialize the sophisticated materials and technologies from this research, the Center develops engineering know-how required for production facilities concurrently with its materials research. As shared basic technologies for effective engineering, it also advances energetic R&D and evolution of key technologies in mechanical design, high-speed rotating machinery analytical design, mechatronics, plastic molding 3D design, fluid analysis, structural analysis, numerical simulation, winding, wet coating, vapor deposition, plasma, surface micro-machining, instrumentation and control, image processing, electrostatic control and other areas.
The Center mobilizes cutting edge R&D activities to forge the world's most competitive product facilities and processes. This helps satisfy customer demands for high performance and function, winning Toray high marks globally for its eco-friendly orientation.
