High-Efficiency in Energy Use

Reducing the weight of automobiles and aircraft by using CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) is directly linked with lower fuel costs, and is known to contribute to reduction of CO2 emissions. Toray's CFRP is at work as an aircraft and automotive material, and has earned an outstanding reputation.
Estimation of the reduction (difference) in CO2 emissions using LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) shows that the use of carbon fibers makes a major contribution to reduction of CO2 emissions.

Automobile

Toray's next-generation concept EV (electric vehicle) prototype. The 160kg of CFRP used represents slightly less than 20% of the 846kg weight of the vehicle body structure.

30%Lighter

Automobiles with 17% CFRP in the vehicle body structure weight are 30% lighter than conventional automobiles (that use no CFRP)

Aircraft

The Boeing 787 represents the first full-carbon aircraft. CFRP was used as a primary structural material in the wings, fuselage, and tail (for 50% of the airframe structural weight).

Aircraft with 50% CFRP used in the body structure weight are 20% lighter than conventional aircraft (that use 3% CFRP)

10%Lighter

Toray's carbon fiber is used in the body of this electric bus, which was developed as part of the Zero Emissions Transportation System project promoted by the City of Kitakyushu, making it about 10% lighter.
In this system, solar-generated power is stored in large storage batteries and used to charge electric buses for operation. In this way, we are working to establish zero emissions of CO2 and other wastes.
