Toray Industries, Inc.

Tokyo, Japan, June 30, 2021 – Toray Industries, Inc., announced today that it and UPR Corporation jointly won the Sustainable Activity Prize as part of the 22nd Logistics Environment Award of the Japan Association for Logistics and Transport. This was for Toray becoming the first company to use “Smart Pallet” employing UPR-developed active RFID tags.

This prize recognizes exceptional contributions from organizations, companies, or individuals to progress in the logistics sector by lowering its environmental impact through conservation and environmental awareness enhancement activities or through pioneering technological development.

Using UPR’s tags has enabled through-transit pallet transportation and eliminated much manual loading and unloading for truck drivers. This has enhanced work environments and logistics productivity. Another factor in receiving this prize was that Toray has been able to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 197 metric tons annually by better tracking pallets to streamline its network for recovering those items.

Key outcomes from using “Smart Pallet” incorporating active RFID tags

・ Carbon dioxide emissions lowered 83%, or 197 metric tons annually
・ Product loading and unloading times reduced 75%, or 23,788 hours annually
・ Work efficiency improved through 100% work time reduction, saving 1,584 hours annually
・ Truck standby times cut 38%, or 5,947 hours annually
・ Bag damage down 35%, or 148 incidents annually

Toray’s logistics policy

Toray will continue stepping up collaboration with other parties to further the cause of green logistics—lowering the environmental impacts of related processes and endeavoring to reduce resulting carbon dioxide emissions. The company will address rising shortages of truck drivers by taking part in the White Logistics Movement, which seeks to enhance the productivity of trucking operations and streamline logistics while improving working conditions for women and drivers older than 60.
