A Century of Materials

To change society through the power of materials—
For a hundred years, this has been our mission, carefully woven,
From a single thread to fibers,
Then resins, films, carbon fiber, and water-treatment membranes.
And now, onward, toward a circular economy and hydrogen-based society.
We keep our finger on today’s pulse, and our ear to people’s voices
As we refine technologies, integrate knowledge, and build lasting trust,
To create new, enduring value for society.

What more meaningful and rewarding work could there be?

As we look ahead to the next hundred years, we ask:
What kind of world will we build, with what materials,
And with whom will we build it?

Toray. Celebrating 100 years.

Our 100-Year
Journey

In 1926, we began with a single product: rayon yarn. Nearly a century later, Toray has grown into a global leader in advanced materials — developing high-value products across a remarkable range of industries and fields. Materials are the foundation of everything we build as a society. Their evolution drives industrial progress, and their potential is far from exhausted. We take pride in the role we play — supporting economic growth and social innovation through the science of materials. Here, we invite you to explore the history, ambitions, and vision that have shaped Toray from its founding to today.

『"A RAY OF LIGHT" & "A Century of History"』 (23:25)

This is a short film inspired by a true story. Yunosuke Yasukawa, the founding chairman of Toray, set out to achieve something that had never been done in Japan before: the domestic production of rayon. At the time, there was no guarantee of success. For Japan, pursuing rayon production was a lonely and uncertain challenge. Even so, Yasukawa firmly believed that this technology would one day support the future of the nation. With that belief, he devoted everything to the pursuit. He gathered engineers from across borders, and no matter how many times he failed, he never stopped moving forward. The determination woven into a single thread became the very origin of Toray—a spirit that continues to be passed down to this day.

a True Story
Tri Huynh began his career as an engineer at Toray Membrane USA — and went on to become its CEO. Driven by early experiences with water scarcity, he has spent his career working alongside colleagues toward a single shared goal: a world where clean water is accessible to everyone, everywhere, at any time.
