Toray Industries, Inc. (headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Akihiro Nikkaku; hereinafter referred to as “Toray”) announced today that this year it is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its business in the Kingdom of Thailand.
On March 20, Toray held a commemorative ceremony and exhibition in the capital city Bangkok, Plaza Athénée Bangkok, A Royal Méridien Hotel. At the ceremony, Sadayuki Sakakibara, Chairman of the Board of Toray, and Toray President Nikkaku welcomed eminent guests including General Surayud, Privy Councilor, Mr. Kittirat, Deputy Prime Minister and Mr. Sato, Japan’s Ambassador to Thailand and spoke about Toray’s future business expansion and the contributions to Thailand while expressing gratitude for Toray’s business in Thailand over the 50 years. About 1,000 people visited this event.
In Thailand, Toray established Thai Toray Textile Mills (TTTM), its first full-fledged overseas production base, in 1963 producing polyester-rayon (T/R) fabrics. Currently, Toray expanded its operation in the country into wide-ranging businesses including Luckytex (Thailand) (LTX) which spins polyester-cotton (T/C) fibers and weaves and dyes the fabrics, weaves and dyes polyester filament fabrics and produces materials for airbags, and Thai Toray Synthetics (TTS), which manufactures nylon-polyester filaments, nylon-PBT resin compounds, polypropylene films, and deposition films. In 2001, Toray established Toray International (Thailand) (TITL), a trading company, and Toray Industries (Thailand) (TTH) in 2002, which controls the business of Toray Group Thailand, thus expanding its business in this crucial export base located at the center of the ASEAN region.
At the same time, Toray established the Thailand Toray Science Foundation (TTSF) in 1994 contributing to the development of scientific technology in the country. Scientific technology is indispensable for the development of a nation and TTSF has been supporting various projects in the natural science fields and recognizing them with awards.
Under the medium-term management program “Project AP-G 2013” launched in 2011, Toray Group aims to become a corporate group that continually expands revenues and profits and is currently driving forward a group-wide project of the Asia and Emerging Country Business Expansion (AE) Project, which is aimed at tapping the burgeoning economies of Asian and other emerging countries. Going forward the group will continue to pursue new business opportunities.
In the region, Toray will especially focus on the rapidly expanding ASEAN region and Thailand, and will actively carry out expansion in not only the existing fiber, films and resin business but also water treatment, pharmaceuticals and medical products and carbon fiber composites businesses.
