Toray Group companies in Malaysia (hereinafter referred to as “TGM”) rolled out the red carpet on 4 October 2018 to welcome the new chief minister of Penang, Mr. Chow Kon Yeow, and his delegation, for an industrial familiarization visit. TGM was the third multinational corporation the Chief Minister has visited since his appointment in May 2018.

The Chief Minister and his entourage were warmly received by Teh Hock Soon, Toray Industries, Inc.’s Chief Representative for Malaysia cum Managing Director of Toray Industries (Malaysia) Sdn. Berhad (TML) and Penfabric Sdn. Berhad (PAB), Hirokazu Kurome, Toray’s Deputy Representative for Malaysia cum Managing Director of Penfibre Sdn. Berhad (PFR), Akihiro Omura, Managing Director of Toray Plastics (Malaysia) Sdn. Berhad (TPM) and Peter Chan Kien Wah, Managing Director of Toray Malaysia Systems Solution Sdn. Bhd. (TMS) as well as other senior TGM personnel.

In his briefing to the distinguished visitors, Teh shared Toray’s strong commitments to create products and technology that improve the safety, security and quality of people’s lives. Besides explaining TGM’s current business operations and future expansion plans, Teh also highlighted the TGM’s various green and sustainable initiatives, such as the 50% reduction in water consumption at PAB since 2010 and segregation of waste at source in line with the Penang state government’s program.

In response, Mr. Chow thanked TGM for the economic contributions as well as its various corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects that have benefited the local community since Toray first invested in Penang in the early 1970s. He stressed that the Penang state government and local authorities would do their level best to support and complement the various industries, including TGM who has been a loyal friend to Penang over the last four and a half decades. The visit has certainly fostered better understanding, closer cooperation and goodwill between the TGM and the local government.
