【United States】Toray Composite Materials America, Inc. (CMA)

March 2019 was a productive month for CSR activities. CMA Tacoma participated in the local Elk Plain School of Choice K-8’s STEM Engineering Showcase in Spanaway, Washington, on March 7 while Spartanburg employees volunteered to help judge the Piedmont Region III Science Fair on March 5 at University of South Carolina Upstate Campus in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Elk Plain requires elementary and middle grade (4 to 6) students to participate in the STEM Engineering Showcase, and the gymnasium was packed with projects. CMA Tacoma’s General Affairs team talked about Toray and engaged over 100 students and parents through an experiment on how to use hollow fiber membranes to filter water from orange juice, a filtration model to see what can be filtered, and presentation of prepreg and carbon fiber in comparison to iron and steel.

The Piedmont Region III Science Fair serves students in elementary through high school grades (1 to 12) in the South Carolina counties of Chester, Cherokee, Lancaster, Spartanburg, Union, and York. The winning project continues to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), which is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition providing an annual forum for more than 1,700 high school students from over 70 countries, so it’s not to be taken lightly. On average, the Piedmont Region III Science Fair displays about 800 projects each year.

The Engineering Showcase and Science Fair events provided excellent opportunities for our CMA employees to connect with the local community of learners, while working together to improve student achievement through science and technology.
