Toray Industries, Inc.

Tokyo, Japan, February 5, 2020 – Toray Industries, Inc., announced today that the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)※ has included the company for the first time in its Water Security A List. The international non-profit organization made the selection in surveying the protection of water resources.

This recognition reflects Toray Group’s ongoing initiatives to help safeguard such resources, setting and reaching specific targets in that regard.

In recent years, climate change has resulted in irregular rainfalls, aridification, and increasingly dire water shortages worldwide.

Global population growth has led to almost 500 million people suffering from water shortages. Demand for food in emerging nations is set to rise in the years ahead, making such shortages a key factor in possibly frequent famines from crop failures. Access to water and sanitation for all is accordingly one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Toray Group has long endeavored to develop revolutionary technologies and advanced materials that benefit societies by helping resolve a range of environmental issues. Such efforts are in keeping with its commitment to innovating ideas, technologies, and products that deliver new value. It has done much to alleviate water shortages around the world by developing and supplying desalination and other water treatment technologies.

Under the Toray Group Sustainability Vision, the Group aims to help materialize “a world with a restored natural environment, with clean water and air for everyone.”

Toray’s targets for 2030 thus include triple the total annual volume of water treated using its water treatment membranes. Another goal is to reduce water usage in production activities by 30% per unit of sales across the entire Toray Group.

Toray will strive to materialize those objectives by developing and supplying water treatment technologies that enhance access to water resources while recycling and reusing water more effectively in the course of business. In acting to resolve water shortages, climate change, and other social issues, Toray Group will help overcome water issues and contribute to social sustainability.

  • The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is a non-profit organization founded in the United Kingdom in 2000 that runs a global disclosure system for investors, companies, cities, states, and regions to manage their environmental impacts by tackling the challenges of climate change, water security, and deforestation.
