【Japan】Toray Industries, Inc.

As part of Toray’s social contribution activities, Toray Group employees from diverse professional backgrounds continued to visit elementary, junior high and high schools around Japan and held lectures from October to December 2019.

Although the contents of the environmental education program “Advanced materials and global environmental issues―Materials can change our lives” and the scientific experiment program “Learning about particles in water” are based on the textbooks for elementary and junior high schools, an increasing number of high schools have been applying for our lectures as they wish to have their students, who are considering joining college or finding employment, to learn about advanced materials that are actually being used and also give them the opportunity to hear about the work of the lecturers as well as R&D at a company.

Comments from students included, “I also would like to study science and technology and do something that would help people,” “I felt that Japan’s advanced technology is something we can boast to the world,” and “I learned that what we are learning is connected to solutions to environmental issues.” The teachers commented “The lecture defied the conventional wisdom, held by the students, that filtration does not clean paints and had a big impact on them,” and “Students benefited from the lecturers’ discussions regarding their career-path selection.”

We have been continuing with the lectures from January 2020, dispatching lecturers from Toray and Toray Group companies to elementary, junior high and high schools, to encourage students to realize the connection between learning science and advanced technology and to nurture their interest in science.
