Toray Industries, Inc.

Tokyo, Japan, February 5, 2021 – Toray Industries, Inc., has set up a dedicated production line at its Shiga Plant for Breath-O Correct (medical device approval number in Japan: 22400BZX00094000), an Orthokeratology (corneal correction therapy) lens manufactured by Universal View Co., Ltd., and distributed by SEED Co., Ltd.

Toray will initiate full-scale production of the lenses during the fiscal year that begins in April 2021 to ensure stable supplies. Another goal is to strengthen competitiveness in Orthokeratology, which is poised to become an important new vision correction modality in Japan and other Asian countries.

Universal View developed Breath-O Correct using a Toray-developed material that offers outstanding resistance to breakage and high oxygen permeability (the permeability coefficient (Dk) is: (156±31) × 10-11(cm2/sec)・[mLO2/(mL・mmHg)]). Universal View launched production in 2012. Toray was the distributor. In April 2019, Universal View, SEED, and Toray agreed to promote Orthokeratology together. SEED accordingly became the distributor in October that year.

Manufacturing lenses in-house will enable Toray to not only stabilize supplies for consumers but also employ advanced material technologies to develop high value-added products. The company will thereby contribute to social progress while sustainably expanding its business.
