Tokyo, Japan, August 5, 2021 – Toray Industries, Inc., announced today that it is sponsoring Tama Art University exhibition for which it supplied samples of Ultrasuede™, a non-woven material with a suede texture.

Open to the public, this exhibition is from August 24 to 28, and from September 6 to 18(except Sunday) at Tama Art University Bureau in the Tokyo Midtown complex in Akasaka, Tokyo. Visitors will see work from the Ultrasuede™ Design Cooking: Toray + Tama Art University Materials Exploration Program of the university’s color/materials/trends/exploration laboratory (CMTEL).

During the exhibition, students from the university will hold a workshop in which they show junior and senior high school students how to craft Ultrasuede™ pochettes.

From May to June this year, Toray and Tama Art University held a workshop in which students of the Department of Product Design used Toray-donated Ultrasuede™. Experts from the company lectured about the benefits of this material and ways to handle it. The students’ works and experimental outcomes were jam-packed with innovative ideas in exploring new horizons for Ultrasuede™. Many pieces were essentially ready for commercialization. The upcoming exhibition will be excellent public showcase of student creativity and the potential of Ultrasuede™.

Toray has supplied information about Ultrasuede™ and donated samples of this material to prominent fashion and design schools in Japan and elsewhere since 2016. It also assists young, up-and-coming designers by sponsoring overseas fashion events and award programs.

The company looks to unleash creativity by driving the evolution of Ultrasuede™, helping to transform societies for the better in keeping with its commitment to innovating ideas, technologies, and products that deliver new value.

About CMTEL
Tama Art University established CMTEL in July 2007 to inspire originality by enabling students to explore colors, materials, and trends. CMTEL draws on the assistance of manufacturers to obtain advanced materials and technologies, functioning as a thinktank for the university’s 4,700 art and design students. It also collaborates with universities and research institutions worldwide in studying materials and trends. The centerpiece of such efforts is an information dissemination and gathering partnership with ArtCenter College of Design of the United States.
