Toray Industries, Inc.

Tokyo, Japan, June 24, 2022 – Toray Industries, Inc., announced today that it set up the Environment & Mobility Development Center in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, and Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, on June 23 as an organization under the direct control of Chief Technology Officer. The new center will reinforce technology development and marketing and enhance collaboration among global development units to build Toray’s business in the environment and mobility fields. Also, the company strengthened the capabilities of the Corporate Marketing Planning Division to enhance sales and marketing functions in those areas.

The Toray Group will accelerate its presence in the environmental and mobility area by providing total solutions that employ its advanced materials, leveraging cross-disciplinary collaboration worldwide between its technology development and sales & marketing units.

The environmental and mobility markets have expanded and diversified around the world in recent years. Efforts to virtually eliminate greenhouse gas emissions have picked up internationally, beginning with the European Green Deal. On the mobility front, a transition to CASE (for Connectivity, Autonomous, Sharing/Services and Electric) principles is guiding the development of electromotive vehicles, as well as of diverse other advanced mobility platforms. These include urban air mobility, drones, and small electric mobility vehicles.

Toray’s new center has integrated and fused capabilities from two units. One is environmental (such as energy-saving housing materials) and new energy-related materials development (such as for fuel cells and lithium-ion batteries) from the Environment & Energy Development Center, which the company established in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture in 2011. The other is solution proposals and technology marketing for automobile applications from the Automotive Center, opened in 2008 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. The Environment & Mobility Development Center will thus be able to greatly reinforce the existing technical marketing capabilities and offer advanced total solutions that bring together the Toray Group’s advanced materials.

The center will be the hub for global environmental and mobility development collaboration. It will work with Toray Advanced Materials Research Laboratories (China), established in Shanghai China in 2012. That center develops new products and provides technical services for the Chinese market. The center will also work with Toray Automotive Center Europe, set up in Munich Germany in 2018, which develops offerings for eco-friendly vehicles in Europe. The center will strengthen and accelerate technology development worldwide by sharing customer issues and needs and undertaking projects in the most suitable countries and territories.

The Corporate Marketing Planning Division now has two new units to bolster environmental and mobility sales. They are the Environmental Solutions Dept. and the Next Mobility Dept. The company will leverage digital marketing to centrally manage an array of sales information. It will also streamline sales activities by drawing on that information. Toray will accelerate efforts to create new value from across its unique businesses by offering advanced solutions that integrate advanced materials from different fields.

Toray has remained committed since its inception to the notion that research and technology development are the keys to its future. It has accordingly reinforced its basic research and technologies, with the Technology Center spearheading advanced materials research and technological development by integrating technological expertise. Toray will continue to draw on its commitment to Innovation by Chemistry in offering optimal solutions that contribute to sustainable social progress.
